In 2019, the global press coverage and government focus on plastic waste increased significantly. With the introduction of a partial ban on microbeads, plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds and with the ban of single use plastics, confirmed to start from April 2022, it’s time for packaging companies & brands to proactively deliver solutions.
The myth that plastic can’t be recycled or reused is something we’re passionate about stopping – and with that in mind, we are delighted to announce that this blog post covers the exciting news that we will now be able to supply Retran®100 packaging made from 100% Post-Consumer Waste.
With a 100% recycled content Retran®100 also beats the new packaging tax that was announced in the March 2020 budget for all plastic materials with a recycled content less than 30% and has been approved by the European Food Standard Agency for direct contact with food.
Following the huge success of Retran® which contained 70% Post-Consumer Waste, Bell Packaging have been working with raw material manufacturers to achieve an even higher percentage of post-consumer waste in their packaging.
This new product is ground-breaking in the packaging world and contains 100% recycled polymer which is derived from home waste i.e. plastic rubbish that has been thrown out, collected, sorted and turned back into material that can be used again.
Retran®100 is an environmentally friendly material, that still delivers an excellent presentation, this is specifically important in Food & Beverages, Personal Care, Stationery and the DIY/Housewares sectors.
Moving from Retran® 70% recycled content to Retran®100 made from 100% recyclable waste was always a long-term goal of Bell and is an excellent achievement which will open up a range of new application areas for our packaging throughout Europe.
The global press and governments are now realising that the pressure to end plastic packaging completely isn’t necessarily the best way to approach environmental change. Confusion around what types of materials and plastics are harmful to the environment could potentially cause more problems.
Plastic packaging can be beneficial in a number of ways, e.g. keeping produce fresh therefore avoiding wastage with the weight of the plastic being a lot less than other alternatives such as glass therefore reducing the carbon footprint.
Therefore, it’s vital that as a business, Bell Packaging continues to deliver innovation in our products to ensure that they have a reduced, little or no impact to our environment whilst quality is still uncompromised.
Bell Packaging are currently testing the Retran®100 product with some of their key clients and as soon as we have received further feedback, we will roll out to the rest of our customer base.
